My favorite decade in a bake shop

The name SusieCakes evokes thoughts of my favorite time period, the 1950s. Maybe it's also the logo with the 1950s homemaker.

However, the store was more modern than mid-century. It fit right into the ritzy city of Newport Beach though SusieCakes was tucked in a corner of a less than gorgeous plaza. You really have to look for it.

For some reason, red velvet trumps vanilla when it comes to a classic cupcake nowadays. This bakery definitely required that I order a red velvet - didn't the red velvet become famous around the 50s and 60s?

I'm going to read about its history over at Serious Eats so check it out too.
